SKIN CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

The month of May is well underway and despite the persistent rain, it is still important to keep in mind that protecting your skin is essential even when it is cloudy outside!

I begin this month with a visit from Stéphanie Richard, who has also been diagnosed with skin cancer, as well as Jasmine MacGowan, Executive Director of the Sauve Ta Peau Foundation.

Since I started raising awareness through social media and in my daily life, I frequently receive testimonies from people affected by skin cancer. I often receive messages from my friends who share posts from Facebook or Instagram surrounding this subject. This is how I discovered Stéphanie. A friend shared her testimony with me and after reading her story, I wrote to her personally to see if she would be interested in coming to tell us about it live on the Balado À Fleurs de Peaux.

Her journey is different from mine and that's what made me curious. Stephanie was diagnosed with stage 1 melanoma, not caused by UV rays (20% of cases). I wanted to know more and to know the reasons that led her to want to consult.

"At that time I didn't understand the magnitude of all this" - Stéphanie Richard

🔆 Here are the highlights

Taking things in hand quickly is important!

As we heard in the last episode, the importance of monitoring your body and self-assessing your skin can really make a huge difference.

This is the case for Stéphanie, who, as soon as her mole appeared, questioned herself and wanted to investigate. Despite the first inconclusive visit to the doctor, she persisted and then, once again, took advantage of a dermatology appointment scheduled for another subject to talk about it and have it checked.

His advice: It is important to follow through when you feel that something is not "normal" and not to hesitate to get a second opinion when the answer you got is not the one you expected. If we remain uncertain, we must investigate.

Questioning: What did I do to get this?

What did I do or not do to get this! This is a question that often arises following the announcement of a diagnosis. We often feel guilty. We feel that we did not do what was necessary, and sometimes, this journey can bring beneficial changes in our lifestyle.

It's important to talk about it

Talking about it is not about playing the victim! Sharing your story not only allows some people to realize that protecting their skin is important, but also allows us to keep in mind that we must stay on the lookout for changes that we can see on our skin.

We are responsible for our health!
