We officially kick off May, Skin Cancer Awareness Month, with our third episode on skin self-assessment.
What better way to start this busy month than by knowing how to detect an injury that could be harmful to your health.
To talk about it, I welcome Dr Marie-Eve Pinet, dermatologist, who gives us her tips and advice.
We will talk, among other things, about the ABCDE well known in dermatology to check if a mole is suspicious, but also how often it would be necessary to check our skin.
An essential episode that will allow you to better monitor your skin and that of those you love.
Basically, evaluating your skin is something to share!

"Â We have our own unique moles." - Dr. Marie-Eve Pinet
Here are the highlights
We have our own moles that have a defined appearance depending on our skin color.Â
Sometimes, a mole may have a suspicious appearance for one individual, but may not be cause for concern for another person. When a mole is completely different from the others we have on our body, and this, in its entirety (shape, color and evolution), it is then advisable to go for a consultation.Â
It is recommended to do a skin self-assessment every month and stay alert if you detect any changes.Â
Self-assessment of your skin is something that happens every month! A bit like when we are told to do it for our breasts regularly, we do the same for our skin.Â
Taking pictures is a good way to see the evolution of a lesion that worries us.Â
This is a great tip to keep you on the lookout, but also to show the evolution of the lesion to the doctor or dermatologist during our visit. Photos remain THE simple and effective way as a benchmark in the self-assessment of the skin.Â
A good trick, the ABCDE.Â
What is ABDE?
This is a reference tool for dermatologists to help us remember the different points to observe when it comes time to do our self-assessment. Keep in mind that this must be taken as a whole.Â
A: Asymmetry. You have to look at both sides to see if they are similar. You can draw a line in your head right in the center of the mole to help you. Is it the same on both sides or completely different?Â
B: Border . Is the edge regular, is it irregular? You have to see that the border is clear and well drawn.
C:Â Color . There are different elements that go into this criterion. Black and red are colors that are more worrisome, again it depends on the skin color (if the skin is dark, seeing black on a mole might be less suspicious versus red on a paler skin). When the mole has many different colors, be on the lookout.
DÂ :Â Diameter . The diameter criterion is around 6mm, like an eraser on the end of a pencil.Â
E: Evolution. The new appearance. A new mole, a sore that does not go away and persists.
When in doubt, consult!

Skin cancer awareness campaignsÂ
The tanning trend remains very popular, but what if we told you that all that sun exposure is prematurely aging your skin with the appearance of wrinkles and pigment spots that damage your skin?Â
Wouldn't you like to maintain healthy, youthful-looking skin for longer?
Among adolescents and young adults aged 15 to 29, melanoma is the fourth most common newly diagnosed cancer.Â
We have questions to ask ourselves regarding this devastating fashion.Â
