In 2022, I made a documentary about the dangers of UV rays on the skin. Here's what I learned:

1) UV rays are responsible for 90% of skin cancer cases, a growing concern across the province, the country and in many other countries around the world.

2) The ozone layer is not responsible for the increase in skin cancer rates due to its degradation, but rather to our own habits of excessive exposure to the sun. Thanks to the Montreal Protocol signed in 1987, the ozone layer will be completely restored by 2030.

3) Just like sunscreen is not carcinogenic. You would have to apply huge amounts over a very long period of time for it to have an impact on us and even then, the tests on oxybenzone were done on fish. There are no miracle foods that protect our cells from developing skin cancer.

4) There is no such thing as a healthy tan. Prolonged and repeated exposure to the sun is harmful to the skin. A tan is actually a sign of skin damage.

5) 5 to 7 sunburns during childhood increase the risk of developing skin cancer in adulthood by 75%.

6) It is essential to protect yourself from the sun all year round, winter and summer, cloudy or sunny. Snow, sand and concrete reflect UV rays, just as some clouds can intensify the UV rays that reach the ground.

7) Skin cancer is a latent disease that develops gradually. It is the accumulation of sunburns over the years that increases the risks.

8) A small lesion on the face (a small skin cancer as I sometimes hear) can cause great damage under the skin and can be disfiguring.

9) We are not born with our freckles; it is the sun that makes them appear (look at a picture of yourself as a baby).

10) Tanorexia exists. It is a mental illness just like anorexia. It is an addiction to tanning and a constant need to tan. The person never sees themselves tanned enough.

11) Outdoor workers are 60% more likely to develop skin cancer due to their prolonged exposure to the sun during the worst hours of sunlight, between 11am and 3pm.

12) As soon as the skin turns red it is a defense mechanism of your skin against UV rays. Although the burn disappears visually, the damage REMAINS subcutaneous.

13) Our phototype determines our resistance to UV rays.

14) It is possible to avoid this type of cancer simply by protecting yourself and incorporating sun protection into your routine. These are simple actions to adopt and teach children.

Tanned skin is not a sign of health. It is a sign that it has been damaged, damaged, burned.

In my dream, these truths will be known to all to counter the fashion of tanning and the desire to stay tanned.
