Did you know that 5 minutes in the sun in summer and 15 minutes in winter is enough to get our vitamin D?

TRUE! 😱

Exposure to sunlight helps in the production of vitamin D in the human body, and it is true that by applying sunscreen to block the sun's harmful rays, you limit the amount of vitamin D produced.

However, there is no scientific data to support the argument that humans need to expose themselves to the sun to produce vitamin D. However, when it comes to sun and health, one fact is clearly established: there is a direct relationship between sun exposure and the incidence of skin cancer. It is therefore clear that we must turn to sources other than the sun to get our vitamin D.

Fortunately, getting enough vitamin D is easier than you might think. We need to meet our daily vitamin D needs through diet and vitamin supplements. Some foods naturally contain vitamin D; others are fortified with vitamin D.

👉🏻Health Canada provides guidelines called “Dietary Reference Intakes” (DRIs) for daily vitamin D requirements (and corresponding calcium requirements) for all age groups.

👉🏽 The DRIs are set at sufficient levels so that no sun exposure is necessary to meet our vitamin D needs.

👉🏿The dietary reference intake for vitamin D for infants up to 12 months is 400 IU per day; this value increases to 600 IU from 1 to 70 years, then to 800 IU after 70 years.

If you are concerned and wondering if you or your children are getting enough vitamin D to protect your health, the first thing to do is to look at what you are eating. It is a simple solution and much healthier than sunbathing!! ✌🏻🤗
